Blessings by Laura Story
Laura Story is a Christian artist from South Carolina. The song “Blessings” became her first huge hit which climbed to No.1 on the Billboard Christian Chart. Laura Story was the bass player for the Silers Band, but eventually moved to record her own solo albums through the encouragement of their manager. “Blessings” is the title of her fourth album, released in May 2011. It debuted at No.2 on the Billboard Christian Album chart.
The song’s theme is worship amidst of life’s hardship. The thought that perhaps the hardship is a blessing in itself. Here are Laura Story’s own words:
“Blessings is just a bunch of songs about worshipping when life is hard”. Her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and she wondered “Why didn’t you just fix it, God? You’re all powerful and all loving… just fix it.” Later after mentioning her desire to return back to normal, her sister said “You know, I think the detour is actually the road.” She realized that “Spending time with [husband] Martin obviously makes me happy, but it makes me a better person. That’s the blessing of it.”
Blessings: Thoughts
Amazing lyrics. The intro reminded me of some 90s r&b song (flashbacks!), but it quickly becomes a nice, simple piano piece. But the true gem of this song is the lyrics. The lyrics are heartfelt, which could have only been written through experience. The words are comforting. This will be a song I will return to many times.
Laura Story – Blessing Lyrics
We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguiseWe pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough
All the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we’d have faith to believe‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguiseWhen friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not, this is not our home
It’s not our home‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise
